I did take a look around at other companies, to see what they were charging. In general, I think cell companies see “additional minutes” as a way to make money. I have no idea what their “per minute” costs are, but I have a hint. My cell company charges $30 for 300 minutes + free weekends. It also changes $40 for 600 minutes + free weeknights + free weekends. Mathematically, then, they are charging $10 for an additional 300 minutes + free weeknights. If we assume the best case scenario for them – that “free weeknights” costs them nothing, then we can calculate that they are charging 3.3 cents per minute on those 300 minutes. Since a company wouldn’t sell you something for less than their cost, their per-minute cost must be less than 3.3 cents / minute. When they charge 40 cents / minute, it’s at least 12x their cost. And that’s under the best-case scenario. Realistically, it costs them less than 3.3 cents / minute.
That’s very low indeed. At AT&T, that rate is .45 cents per min. So, you see, you’re being given an INCREDIBLE bargain!
If I were a conspiracy theorist, I’d think the corporations were behind the dumbing-down of the schools. Consumers who can think = trouble.
